The Prison Industrial Complex and Xenophobes! Together at Last!

Yes, folks, its one post combining two favorite topics:

1.the US’s obsession with locking up its own citizens (we’re better at it than anyone else) and

2. the US’s obsession with making foreign born people feel unwelcome.

Oh wait! There’s a third!

3. the US’s obsession with profit.

All 3 are coming together nicely in the context of Arizona’s controversial new immigration law SB 1070, which goes into effect at the end of this month.

From the local CBS affiliate KPHO’s website (via crooksandliars.com):

a CBS 5 News investigation revealed that there is one business that could profit from the implementation of SB 1070 and similar immigration measures. The private prison industry houses illegal immigrant detainees for the federal government. Those companies could gain contracts with state and local agencies to house illegal immigrants arrested for state violations….CBS 5 Investigates learned that two of [Governor] Brewer’s top advisers have connections to [Corrections Corporation of America].

But of course! I would be interested to see some information about how the prison industry is using lobbying power on subjects of immigration. I’m definitely gonna be on the lookout for anything being reported in that vein. It’s in their financial best interest to make law more draconian, to criminalize as much of our behaviour as possible and to demonize those caught in the legal system. Imagine munitions manufacturers or gravediggers lobbying for war, for example.

  1. There’s so much racism coming out of this law that it sometimes makes me feel like if I’m watching one of those bad made for tv movies or Mississippi Burning or something like that and it saddens me to realize that this type of ignorance and intolerance actually exists.

Good post Karina, nice to have again your insights on this type of subjects
